Horse Training and Supervision of Personnel

PARENTING 101

 Basic Tenets

  • Set them up for success and let them succeed
  • Let them have a little rein
  • Self Carriage is more important than forcing it
  • Make the right thing easy, and the wrong thing difficult
  • Let them make a mistake before you fix them
  • Don’t anticipate failure, ease up on the reins
  • Never, Never get mad
  • Prepare them for each change
  • If you ride them like they are going to buck- they will
  • Both are like computers- they don’t do what you want them to do, they do what you tell them to do.
  • Lead it! Lift it! Open the door- expect them to step through it
  • Recognize the slightest try
  • Your response must be immediate
  • Don’t be afraid to give them some leg and take away their nose if they need it.
  • Focus on the destination, their ears won’t fall off and they won’t change color- don’t just look at the now…
  • Don’t hold a grudge, start each ride fresh.
  • Keep your mind open, there are new ideas out there and they might work
  • Set success up and then wait for it to happen
  • Try to make it their idea. They like that
  • If you get bucked off, get back on. But try to figure out why it happened.
  • Give them something to do, idle horses get into trouble
  • If a horse doesn’t get along in the herd, get rid of him. There are plenty of good horses out there.
  • You are always training, you can’t whip and spur today and say it didn’t happen tomorrow. The horse doesn’t know the difference when you didn’t set a good example.
  • Give them some time to change, it doesn’t happen overnight.
  • Consistency is key.
